Albany Kayak Trip

What a fantastic week in Albany. Unbelievable weather, warm sunny wind free days. We started with a paddle on the King River, exploring its upper reaches from the Upper King Bridge. Once we could go no further we retreated and went downstream to the imposing granite boulders in the middle of the river.

The following day we crossed Oyster Harbour in the early morning, scarcely a breath of wind. Then we paddled up the tranquil (well once we got past the waterski area) Kalgan River. A lunch time swim was just what we needed before we continued upstream to the ancient fish traps. The day ended by disembarking at Montgomergy’s winery where we enjoyed a few chilled wines on the verandah.Monday saw us give the kayaks a rest while we explored West Cape Howe. We walked out from the Bibbulmun track to the Cape – what a stunning sight. Ancient granite rocks stretching up from the pounding ocean below.

The following day dawned cloudy but calm. We set off from Camp Quaranup by 8am, paddling across Princess Royal Harbour and out through the Ataturk channel. It remained calm through the channel and into the sound. We stopped for morning coffee on Mistaken Island, the white sands of Goode Beach stretching out before us. We paddled over past the whaling station and out towards Bald Head. Past the craggy limestone cliffs and past granite slopes with waves crashing onto them. We returned to our favourite Misery Beach for lunch. What a misnomer! It’s a beautiful beach with white sands, blue seas and a granite backdrop. Coffee at the waterfront cafe completed a perfect day.

The final day was spent walknig out to Bald Head and back- for me it would have to be one of the top walks in WA. 16km of dramatic scenery, granite rocks and blue ocean.

Add to this evenings spent on the verandah at Camp Quaranup, great food, good wine, many laughs and what could be a more refreshing week! Click here to see more great photos from this superb week
