Staying hike fit over summer

Posted on

Staying hike fit over summer is not easy. Sure, the weather in Tasmania can be perfect for hiking, but the rest of the country seems to oscillate between baking hot and actually on fire!

If you are planning an autumn walk, how do you keep hike fit when it is too hot outside to walk?

There is the obvious stuff like start early or late, keep hydrated and wear the right gear, but we want to push deeper into this issue with some serious discussion.

Here are our Inspiration Outdoors tips for remaining hike fit over summer.

Tip One: Focus on exercise intensity, not exercise time

We get that you are not going to do a 3 hour walk when it is 32 degrees and the dog has threatened you with divorce if you take her outside… But meet us halfway. A 30 minute walk done at twice the pace is great for your fitness. You might need a wheel barrow for the dog, but I am sure she will enjoy the ride.

Tip Two: Exercise with friends

If you are going to suffer in the heat, at least don’t do it alone.  Enlist friends – make them suffer too! As Woody Allen says, “80% of success is showing up” and if your friends are expecting you down at the park, you are more likely to turn up.

Tip Three: Go for a bike ride

Sure, it is not walking, but riding is a fantastic way of keeping fit over summer. Sure it is still hot, but once you get a bit of speed the wind will cool you down a little. Sure you haven’t ridden a bike in 20 years, but I am sure it will come back to you… umm, its like riding a bike 🙂

Tip Four: Walk to the pool/beach

A brisk walk, followed by a cooling swim. Or if you are this idiot, try combine walking and swimming at the same time!

Tip Five: Do the moon walk

There is nothing weird about walking after dark… Is there? Surely not when its been 87 degrees all day. Walking at night has two benefits.

One) You are exercising

Two) You are not drinking (or at least delaying)
