Overview

Complete one of the world's great coastal walks with Inspiration Outdoors. The Cape to Cape Track meanders 123km between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, sometimes along the beach, sometimes along cliff-tops, but nearly always with a view of the wonderful Margaret River coastline.

By carrying only a daypack, and walking the track in graded stages, people with a moderate level of fitness should be able to complete the walk. Preparation will make the experience all the more enjoyable. Excellent food, comfortable accommodation and knowledgeable guides will complement your trip.

Most people do need to do some training before hand, but you do not need to be an elite athlete or anything. It is a good amount of challenge, with mostly moderate terrain, but a couple of long days. The greatest challenge are the beach sections. Approximately 15-20% of the walk is on the beach with the rest of a mix of cliff tops, coastal heath and forest.

Highlights of this walk

Stunning Coastal Vistas: Traverse one of the globe’s premier coastal trails, oscillating between serene beaches and dramatic cliff-tops, ensuring a consistent backdrop of the magnificent Margaret River coastline.

Burst of Color with Wildflowers: During spring, be enchanted by the rich tapestry of wildflowers dotting the landscape. Experience everything from the intricate beauty of orchids to the vibrant allure of kangaroo paws.

Convenient Central Stay: Enjoy the comfort of Margaret River Motel, strategically situated within walking distance to the Margaret River township. Revel in the convenience of a single accommodation point, allowing hassle-free unpacking and a week of relaxation.

Engaging Natural Interactions: Delight in intimate moments as you spot dolphins frolicking in the waves or hear the calls of local birds, creating an immersive nature experience.

Historical Touchpoints: Explore landmarks like the Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouses, merging the region’s rich history with its unparalleled natural beauty.

Itinerary

Departing from Perth, we reach Cape Naturaliste by lunch time. Enjoy the first of many fresh picnic lunches for the week on the lawn at the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and get to know your companions for the week.

Today's walk on the Cape to Cape track is relatively easy with mostly cliff-top trails and some beach walking. Keep an eye out for dolphins!

Note, as we walk on the first afternoon, please wear your hiking clothes on the bus and bring your day pack ready to go. After our walk, the bus will meet us at Yallingup, then we will drive to our accommodation in Margaret River.

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 - Drive from Perth, walk Cape Naturaliste to Yallingup

Some beach walking in the morning, and superb coastal views all day. The red granite boulders, white sandy beaches and turquoise waters provide a stunning contrast along this section of rugged coastline.

We'll have lunch at the surfing mecca, Injidup, visit Quinninup Falls and finish with ocean views at Moses Rock.

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 - Yallingup to Moses Rock

This is a great day, and relatively easy - although there are a few hills and some sandy patches. The magnificent sweeping views of the coast from cliff-top vantage points, and the towering granite cliffs of Willyabrup are two of many highlights.

If the weather's nice, you might enjoy a refreshing swim in the sheltered bay at Gracetown. Or just soak those feet as you reflect on another great day on the Cape to Cape track.

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 - Moses Rock to Gracetown

It's fairly easy walking among coastal heath to Ellensbrook historic homestead, where you can enjoy morning tea and explore the grounds. The track then takes an inland route, which gives us a good appreciation of the landscape away from the ocean for a while.

After lunch we're back on the coast, and a very pleasant beach walk takes us to Cape Mentelle. We finish the day at the Margaret River mouth - a good place for a swim if it's warm.

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 - Gracetown to Margaret River mouth

A beautiful variety of scenery awaits us today! We'll head inland again to start with, and enjoy morning tea beside the Boodjidup brook. A beach walk takes us to Redgate for lunch and then a spectacular stretch of cliff-top walking sees us reach shady Contos Campground for afternoon tea.

The final part of the day is through the cool peaceful forest on firm, easy tracks. It's a wonderful end to a wonderful day on the Cape to Cape track. Despite the distance, today is not usually considered the most difficult.

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 - Margaret River mouth to Boranup Forest

This morning we continue through the karri forest before making our way down to the aqua-blue waters of Hamelin Bay. This 6 km beach stretch can be very enjoyable, with the right mindset. Enjoy the peace, the view and the moment as you walk into Hamelin Bay for a picnic lunch.

After lunch it's a short but challenging hike up to the tiny Foul Bay Lighthouse, with sweeping views back along the coast. Then before you know it, you'll reach the end of another beautiful day.

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 - Boranup Forest to Cosy Corner

This can be an exciting last day, especially if it's windy! Much of the walking is along a limestone ledge close to the sea, complete with blowholes!

There is a long beach stretch where you can daydream about all that you've achieved this week. After that we head inland, occasionally sighting the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, signalling the end of your walk. Your Cape to Cape track 'end to end' hike officially finishes at the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. At the end of this memorable journey, it's time to kick off your boots and celebrate your wonderful achievement!

Accommodation: Margaret River Motel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 - Cosy Corner to Cape Leeuwin

Enjoy a sleep in and a leisurely breakfast with your morning free in Margaret River. Pick up some take-away lunch (own expense) before we head back to Perth, arriving by mid afternoon (usually between 2.30 and 3pm).

About Walking Tours In General

How hard are the walks?

The difficulty of the walks ranges from tour to tour, from easy to challenging. We design all of our walking tours to be achievable for those with a moderate level of fitness. We do recommend doing some training before most tours, because physical activity is always more enjoyable if you are physically prepared. We will send you information about how to train when you book.

When on tour we find that a positive mental attitude is most important and that if you focus on the scenery, the company and the moment, and not on the kilometres, then you find yourself reaching your destination with little problem. You can always have a day or sometimes an afternoon off to relax if you feel like it. If you have any concerns about your fitness or ability to complete a walk, give us a call or send us an email and we can talk you through it.

Do I have to twin-share accommodation? Can I have my own room?

Our tour prices are based on rooms being twin share (two single beds in one room) or double (one double/queen bed in a room, shared by a couple). If you are travelling alone, we will place you in a room with someone of the same gender. If you have opted for a single supplement, this means you will have your own room but we won’t always be able to guarantee your own bathroom and king/queen bed due to the types of accommodation we use for group bookings. Often we stay at 2 or 3 bedroom chalets so that we can cook and have a common area for the group to relax and mingle at the end of your days walk. If having your own bathroom is important, give us a ring and we will see if it is possible.

Will I hold up the group if I’m a slow walker?

We find a lot of people who haven’t been on a walking tour before worry about this, but it’s rarely an issue. We keep a comfortable steady pace with plenty of opportunities to rest and take in the scenery along the way. Usually the group will spread out over a couple of hundred metres as we walk.

Normal walking pace on a formed surface like a road or footpath is around 4.5 – 6 km per hour and we tend to average just over 3 km per hour on bush tracks. It’s not a stroll but it’s not a brisk walk either. If you feel you may be slower than this, try some longer training walks to increase your walking fitness.

What is the average age of Inspiration Outdoors’ guests?

About 80% of our walkers are aged between 45 – 75, but we welcome all adults on our tours. We get a roughly 60/40 female to male split.

What’s the food like? Can you cater for my dietary needs?

We serve simple, nutritious and delicious food on tour prepared by our guides, using fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. Sometimes we also eat out at restaurants. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, fresh fruit, pre-dinner nibbles and a two course evening meal are all included. We are happy to adapt our menu to suit many dietary needs including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets – please ask when you book.

Are your walking tours just for “bushwalkers”?

Our walks are for anyone who enjoys walking and nature – bushwalkers or not. Our walks are conducted in safe, supportive and fun environments and you don’t need specialised equipment or experience to undertake them. We give you information about what you will need to bring and how you should prepare for each tour and we’re always here to answer any questions or concerns.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General, Day Walk FAQs

Do I have to walk every day on tour?

Of course not – it’s your holiday and you should do what you feel! Relax at the accommodation, come for a drive, get dropped off in town or go for a stroll of your own. On some days there is also the opportunity to walk for part of the day. This last option depends on whether there is vehicle access to the track.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General

What do I have to carry when I walk?

Very little. A water bladder or bottles, lunch/snacks/fruit for the day. a rain jacket, some personal first aid supplies and, on some days, lunch. You will probably want a camera as well. We return to accommodation each evening so there is no need to carry a large backpack.
