A place of astounding natural beauty and great spiritual significance, Western Australia's Kimberley region is Australia untamed. While the roads here can be rough, this five-day inland adventure takes in several of the Kimberley's highlight attractions, plus a whole host of lesser-known favourites. Weave through the boulders and chasms of the Bungle Bungles, encounter Dreaming stories in the Mimbi Caves and learn the legend of Jandamarra on a tour of Tunnel Creek. Join the Darlgunya cultural walk, search for freshwater crocodiles at Windjana Gorge and spend each night camping under the stars.

Highlights of this walk

  • Explore the Bungle Bungles – a unique orange and black striped 'beehive' formation that is more than 20 million years old.
  • Take a guided tour of Mimbi Caves with a local Gooniyandi guide and explore one of Western Australia's largest cave systems.
  • Visit the sacred Cathedral Gorge surrounded by birdsong and the towering red rock walls of the gorge.
  • Join the Darlgunya Cultural Walk. Stroll through the remnants of the old postal settlement and learn about the wild Fitzroy River.
  • Search for freshwater crocodiles, local birdlife and indigenous bushtucker at Windjana Gorge – an oasis in the outback beneath gorge walls rising 90 m.

Itinerary

Welcome to Broome! Or Rubibi, in the language of the Yawuru people, who are the Traditional Owners of the land on which Broome is now located. Start your adventure straight away, setting off early this morning as you travel east to Fitzroy Crossing. When you arrive, join the Darlgunya Cultural Walk, where your local Indigenous guide will take you through the remnants of the old postal settlement and down to the Fitzroy Riverbanks. Learn about the wild Fitzroy River from your knowledgeable guide – its plants, wildlife and the significance to local culture. Tonight, settle into camp and watch the sunset and the stars as they come alive, away from the city lights.

This morning, travel to Purnululu National Park (or better known as the Bungle Bungles). On the way, stop at the China Wall near Halls Creek – a natural white limestone wall which looks like a miniature Great Wall of China. Then, continue to Purnululu National Park. When you arrive, take some time to settle into your private permanent tented camp and take in the views of the Bungles Massif and the Kimberley night sky from your door.

Spend today exploring the highlights of Purnululu National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its landscape of unique orange and black striped ‘beehive’ geological formations, created by rivers over a period of 20 million years. To protect its unique landscape, the area was made a national park in 1987 and now boasts UNESCO World Heritage status. Visit the Echidna Chasm, known for its towering Livistonia Palm trees, then take a short walk into Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural amphitheatre. Later today, maybe take an optional scenic helicopter flight for a bird’s eye view over the beehive domes.

Say goodbye to Purnululu and travel to the ancient realm of Mimbi Caves – one of Western Australia's largest cave systems, on Gooniyandi Country. Spiritually significant, these limestone caves are one of the oldest identified sites of human occupation in Australia. Learn about Dreaming with a local Gooniyandi guide and hear the traditional stories and sacred meaning of this area. Then, explore the crystal-clear pools, fossils and ancient rock art before sitting down to some fresh damper and billy tea with the Gooniyandi Traditional Owners before you head back to Fitzroy Crossing.

This morning, travel to Bunuba country – once a Devonian reef, this terrain is over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants. Along the way, stop at Tunnel Creek. Spend some time exploring the cave system here and learn about the legend of Jandamarra – an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide-out in the late 1800s. Then, travel to Windjana Gorge where you’ll stop for a picnic lunch. As you walk through the outback oasis and beneath the gorge walls, look out for freshwater crocodiles, local birds and indigenous plants. Then, travel along the Gibb River Road from the Napier Ranges to Broome, passing the Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’ along the way. Today is a bit of a long travel day, so maybe get stuck into your book or favourite podcast. When you arrive in Broome, your trip will come to an end. Important Notes

  • Start & End Time – This trip starts in Broome with an early pick-up at 7:30am on day 1 at our default pick-up location, unless you request an alternative pick-up location well ahead of departure. The trip finishes at around 7:00pm on the last day. We recommend you arrive a day prior to the trip’s departure date and onward travel should not be booked until the following day.
  • Trip Style & Sleeping Bag – Accommodation on this trip is twin share and is a combination of pop-up tents and permanent tents with basic beds. Each traveller will also get a swag (Australian bedroll), so you can opt to sleep under stars, a true Australian experience. Please bring your own sleeping bag or purchase one from us in advance. A pillow, pillowcase, bottom sheet and a swag/canvas bed roll are always provided.
  • Single travellers & accommodation upgrade – A Single Supplement is not available on the default version of this trip. As a single traveller you will share a tent with another single traveller of the same gender, or you can use your swag. An accommodation upgrade (Camping Plus) is available upon request and subject to availability, at an additional cost. Camping Plus can also be booked with the option for a single supplement. Please see the accommodation section of your trip notes or speak to your travel agent for more details.
  • Weather – Departures are all subject to regional weather conditions and road closures – usually only a concern in Apr & Oct / Nov.
  • Luggage – Space in our vehicles is limited so please keep luggage light – bring only essentials in a small soft bag, MAXIMUM 15kg. Suitcases are NOT suitable. Excess luggage must be left in Broome or sent to a forward destination.
  • Participatory camping – It is important that travellers participate in setting up camp each night, though the leader can assist where necessary. The leader also appreciates the assistance or one or two group members in preparing/clearing meals. It is essential that all our groups leave the camp they stay in as they found them for the next travellers – the Kimberley is a pristine wilderness and it is our responsibility to ensure it stays this way.
  • Camping additional notes – We provide all the camping gear you’ll need: stretcher beds with mattresses, spacious 190cm-high tents, comfortable camp chairs, linen, and a pillow. The only thing you’ll need to bring is a sleeping bag — or you can purchase one from us for an additional fee.
    • Camping at the Fitzroy River Lodge involves dome tents with stretcher beds and mattresses. On-site facilities have hot showers and flush toilets.
  • Itinerary additional Notes
    • Day 2: China Wall / Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles): The journey will take around seven hours. The walk at China Wall includes a steep descent into a dry creek bed. Prefer to keep things level? The view from the car park is just as rewarding. This evening’s campsite offers modern amenities, a sheltered dining deck with sweeping views, and a campfire under the stars.
    • Day 3: Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles): The Echidna Chasm Walk is a Grade 4 trail, about 2 km return, usually completed in under an hour. It winds through a narrow gorge with walls soaring up to 200 metres, narrowing to just a metre wide at points. The track is rocky and includes sections of moderate climbing. The Cathedral Gorge Walk is also a Grade 4 track, covering a 2 km return distance. Most walkers spend 1 to 2 hours exploring this unmaintained, rocky trail. Today you’ll also have the opportunity to view the domes from above with an optional helicopter flight. Your guide can organise this for you, as we have pre-held spots with the operator. Booking through your guide helps ensure the flight aligns smoothly with the rest of the day’s plans.
    • Day 4: Mimbi Caves / Fitzroy Crossing: The journey will take around 7.5 hours in total. Some sections of the Mimbi Caves experience involve scrambling over uneven, rocky terrain, including sharp rocks and some rock hopping. A head torch will be essential—please have it ready before the tour begins. Please note: dinner is not included this evening. The restaurant at El Questro Station offers a casual pub-style menu for guests to purchase their own meals.
    • Day 5: Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) / Windjana Gorge / Derby / Broome: Travel time will be approximately 8 hours. The Tunnel Creek Trail is a Grade 5 (difficult) walk, covering 2km return and taking roughly an hour. Expect loose rocks and uneven terrain, with sections that involve rock hopping, wading through waist-deep water over submerged rocks, and even a short swim in complete darkness. Certain parts require you to maintain three points of contact. Make sure your day pack includes swimwear, a towel, closed-toe wet shoes, and a head torch—your main luggage will be packed away in the vehicle for the day. The Windjana Gorge Trail is an easier Grade 2 walk, also 2km return, typically completed in about an hour. The track is uneven in parts and may include some mild inclines. The tour concludes upon your arrival back in Broome, either late this afternoon or early evening. We strongly recommend staying an extra night in town before flying out, as delays are possible. Your leader will drop you off at either your chosen accommodation or the designated tour meeting point.
